cpu fan running constantly at high speed

Specs: Windows Vista
from the moment i switch on my computer the cpu fan runs at constantly at high speed. fan and heat sink have been removed, new thermal paste applied and refitted, no difference.
could this be a problem with main board or software or fan? anyideas welcome

Is that the only thing wrong with it? Is it booting up ok? Is the fan connected to the 'cpu fan' connection on the motherboard?

PC boots normally and everything appears to run ok, fan connected to cpu fan connection on mainboard.

PC Medion 118901, MS7091v1 mainboard, pentium 4 3.4ghz, 512mb ran, win xp sp3

Have you checked the system temperatures. You can monitor voltages and temperatures in real time with a number of programs. speed fan is one that I am linking below.


If the temperatures are good then there may be a setting in the BIOS (setup) to allow the fan to run as needed. Look for it. Not sure what it is called with Intel systems.
