cpu fan failure after replacement

My HP fan went so i replaced it and when I pwoered the comp on it said fan failure and to check the connection but the fan was going. so i plugged the old one in and reboot and it boots up fine. anyone have any idea wats wrong?

It sounds like you fan doesn't have the detection software that you computer would used to know what the rpm's are. If the fan is spinning and the computer will boot you can just leave it. What connection are you using to attach the fan. Four Pin, three pin. And does it match with the mother board.

in addition to the first post's point, the problem could be that the new fan does have rpm monitoring but runs at lower rpms than your old fan (like if you put in a 80mm fan to replace a 60mm fan). Boot up with the old fan and go into bios and turn off rpm monitoring. Which is probably not possible on an hp since their bios is basic, but you never know.
If all else fails you could keep the old fan plugged in but aimed at the vid card or whatever, and use the new fan on the cpu heatsink but plug it in on a different connector.
