Short Desc: PC's CPU fan does not spin and computer cannot boot.

Up to last night my computer was working perfectly. Today I boot up my machine and I got to see part of the booting DOS messages and then froze just before seeing the Win2000 DOS Splash Screen.

PC's CPU fan does not spin when computer is turned on. Nothing comes on the monitor. The case fan spins and the motherboard, the CD Roms and Drives have power. The system does nothing when turned on.

I tried the following:

I removed all cards (except) video, removed HD and CD Rom cables from Mother Board and removed power cables to HD, CDROM & Floppy. I removed RAM and reinstalled. I also tried a different video card and nothing.

I wonder if I could have one of the following problems:

- Fried CPU (I have Intel PII 900MHz)
- Bad CPU FAN or no power to CPU FAN (do you know how I can check this?)
- Bad CMOS battery (but I would assume that a bad battery would not stop me from seeing something on the monitor)
- Bad motherboard

Should I try reseating the CPU? How do I do that? I have the static wrist band but I do not want to damage the circuitry or the pins while removing.

Any advice please?

I suggest replacing the fan.

I agree with Rich, replace the CPU heatsink/fan. Most motherboards now have protective measures to prevent the system from booting (and possibly frying the CPU) if no RPM signal is received from the CPU fan.
