Corrupt or Unreadable external drive

July 13, 2009 at 20:45:29
Specs: Vista, Core2DuoE7400/4gig
Got this external drive from a friend that says 'file is corrupt and unreadable' when she tries to access it. It is an Iomagic 40gig external usb drive. She has all of her kids tax info on it so she desperately needs the data back. I have tried easy recovery pro, spinrite and a couple of other data recovery programs and I still get the same message. Help. All opinions are greatly appreciated and respected.

Thanks for the reply. I get the same message as before - 'file or directory corrupt or unreadable'. Am I looking at a dead drive? Losing a little patience with it.

That doesn't look good. Below are some recovery programs but?

PC Inspector (freeware)
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...
Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs
IMO the best, but not free
GetDataBack

Thanks for the reply. I tried both and each system 'stopped responding' and froze my pc...twice. May the drive RIP?

Before you put the drive to sleep you could try removing it from the enclosure and connecting directly to a controller internally.

Does the enclosure require AC power in addition to the USB connection? If so, it will be a 3.5" model and with that capacity drive will surely be an IDE model.

Connecting directly to an IDE cable inside a computer takes the external enclosure circuitry out of the equation.

One more thing you could try is to run testdisk on it. Can't hurt at this point. If the file system is trashed testdisk MAY be able to rebuild it.

Read the tutorials before using the program.

Thanks for the reply. Ran testdisk to the point to where it stated 'copy data..etc' and then it stated the file system seems damaged.

Did you read the tutorials? That is what you use testdisk for, to repair damaged partitions/file systems. You need to read in more detail.

Don't you know that Murphy's rule applies anytime you volunteer to help a friend. Part of that is it will always take twice as long as projected.

Tell your friend to backup stuff in the future. IMO optical media is the way to go.

Wonder if unstoppable copier might work.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

She came and got the drive this morning. I still couldn't get her
data back and then I tried to explain to her the importance of
backing up her data....fell on deaf ears! So I said have fun.
Thanks for the replies and assistance. You guys are still the
cats.

She was probably pissed that you didn't bail her out. Can't win them all. Let her take it to the geek squad.
