Hi,

I see these Dual 3.5 Case Enclosures with Raid for sale. My goal is to have 2 copies of a backup on each harddrive and then ship one harddrive out and keep one here in case something happens during transport.

So my question is if I enable Raid 1 (Mirroring), when i'm done copying the backups onto the raid and ship one out, will it be accessible? ie the receiver takes the HD and installs it in an enclosure and accesses the data.

We are talking about 100+ gigs so no dvd and tapes would take forever to copy on and off.

Thanks,

That would work but if you are talking about internal drives transporting them could cause damage. If this a one time thing?

We are transporting the data with internal harddrives. getting external harddrives doesn't mean that they are safe from transportation either. there are no conveniences in terms of repairing external harddrives.

So just to confirm, if i split up the Raid configured drives, and install them as a slave in a computer, I can read the data, correct?

Raid should just be the interface, doing the work of mirroring the data. therefore, if I split it up, the data on both drives should be readable.

You didn't answer one question. Is this a one time thing or a regular task. If a regular task you may find software that would mirror two separate external drives. That way you wouldn't need to open the enclosure.

RAID 1 is mirroring. You need some type of software/ hardware to make the RAID 1 happen. I'm guessing you are looking at a USB external drive kit that has two harddrives in it and can be run in either RAID 1 or RAID 0. You may want to verify with the manufacturer that the data would be accessable by connecting to an internal controller on a desktop.

sorry... yes it will be a regular task....

and yes I'm looking at the dual enclosures that have Raid capabilities....

Thanks for the advice! I'll check with the manufacturer.
