My CPU is running at 55 degrees... and I want it cooler. I have a M7VIW motherboard and I've only been able to find connectors for 2 fans... I have two fans... A Case fan and one on the CPU... Where can I connect another fan?

you don't have to connect case fans to the motherboard you can buy ones which just connect to your power supply unit as for how many and placement do a search and you will find the anser as this question and similer have been posted offer so read through them and you get some idea of what to do

take the side panel off your case and note your new cpu temp. No matter how many fans you get your cpu temp will get below that number, with the case cover back on and new fans installed.

Might be best to get a new cooler. To answer your question, two fans should be plenty.

well many ppl would tell u 55 degrees is not hot and u'll be ok with it...

I once heard a friend who was very much into cooling and stuff tell me that the air sucked in must equal the air sucked out for optimal performance... now don't quote me on this but it does sound sensible because you need a steady airflow around the case.

if u do go for fans go for quieter ones!
mines like a wind tunnel :(* and if you've not got space then drill some holes thru the side panels like me :D and fix them on.
OR buy some of those fans that fit in a PCI slot... or invest in a better heatsink fan for ur cpu... hell theres lotsa different types of cooling available... checkit :D

Airflow is very important in cooling. More important than the number of fans. Ideally you want the cool air coming in the bottom and leaving out the top. You want this air current to pass over the CPU and not be deflected around it by cables, etc..

You know the arms that come with Zalman fans?, well I had one of those sitting around so I mounted a Volcano 7 fan on it and positioned it over the copper heatsink that came with the Zalman. It brought the idle temp on my XP2000 from 55C to 46C in an 80F room. This is accompanied by 4 80mm case fans and the V7 setting on high.

I apologize if somebody has already mentioned this, but I haven't read all the responses.

I built a brand new case for my new gaming system. Complete with 4 intake fans and 4 exhaust fans strategically located to maximize airflow over the chipset and video card.

After running 3DMark tests (extensive) and a full spectrum of memory and PC Benchmark tests overnight I was happy in the morning to see that my system was running at human body temperature (ok...slight fever at 99F, 37C)

This sounds like a success story, right? Wrong. My friend was razzing me for buying all these fans which ultimately create the same conditons as having the PCI slides off and the side off. I didn't believe him and set off to prove him wrong.

I took all the PCI slides off and removed the side panel of the case (which has 2 of the 4 exhaust fans). I queued up the exact same set of video/memory/cpu benchmarks to run overnight.

The result? 8F difference. The system was running at 91F, 32C. Not only does it run 5C cooler (8F) under the most extreme scenario's that I personally will ever put it through, but it's a heck of a lot quieter without all those fans...even with the side off.

So, there you have it. Drop a small wod of dinero on fans and a lot of time on perfecting airflow convections, or just pop out the PCI slides and the side case panel and let the cpu fan do all the work.

55? Please specify Fahrenheit or Celcius as it tends to make a difference. 55 degrees Fahrenheit is no problem, but on the Celcius side, it may be a little warm. My Athlon 950 runs at around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and I have no case fans. I think you should consider getting a new heatsink/fan for your CPU. I don't know the long term affects of running an Athlon at 55 degrees Celcius (I'm assuming that's what you meant). You may be just fine, but I would be a little concerned.

As far as case fans are concerned, the typical spec I've seen has one case fan just below the power supply (assuming the tower is standing up) in the back, and the other case fan is on the front of the case, at the bottom. The latter will suck in the air, and the one below the power supply will blow it out.

(9/5C+32) = Fahrenheit
(5/9(F-32)) = Celcius

Plus, you note that you have 128k of RAM. You ought to consider upgrading to 128 Meg. :-)

Good luck.
