I wonder if anyone ever convert succesfully any DVD / CD drive to SATA using an SATA converter board?

AFAIK you can only use ATA/100 or ATA/133 IDE hard drives with a IDE/SATA converter. SATA optical drives are expected to be released in the 2dd quarter this year.

Yes I did it with adapters from ide to serial ata. It was a TDK cd-rw and a Sony dvd 510a. I was the on board serial ata on an asus A7N8X-deluxe. I worked great until I flashed the BIOS to upgrade the CPU and that also upgraded the BIOS of the serial ata chip. It worked great before that. Not all SATA chips will do it, if it works you get lucky if it don't you can hook up your hard drives to them with the adapters. Good luck. RSG
