contrast ratio what is it? LCD

CPU/Ram: 2.6mhz 512 ram

Can someone explain to me how contrast ratio is and if 2000:1 is better then 700:1 on a lcd monitor?

Stuart's link pretty much tells the tale.

As an aside, the highest I've seen is about 750:1 ; if there are some higher, I'd be interested to know about it.
