Hi there,
there is loads of posts around this subject and i am pretty sure that my problem is the power supply that my computer wont turn on but i just wanted to check something. When i plug my monitor or speakers into the computer they turn on but the monitor comes up with no signal on the screen.
Is it just a case that there is enough power to turn these on but that there is not enough power to actually turn the computer on it?
Please can someone help before i buy power supply.
many thanks

When you say "When I plug my monitor or speakers into the computer they turn on but the monitor comes up with no signal on the screen", you are actually plugging the outlet plug from the monitor into the computer? Most monitors are plugged into a wall outlet (or power surge). Same holds true to powered speakers. Please elaborate. If you're thinking the video cable from the computer to the monitor powers it on, you are incorrect. The only thing the monitor does with no signal is go into a low power standby. When you say your computer does not power up, you are getting no posts? Did you disconnect everything but the bare necessities? There's a series of steps needed performed in order to determine the PS as being faulty. Let us know what you've done so far.
We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

Hi,
yes my monitor and speakers are plugged directly into the computer and not into the wall! Which is why i think the PS is to blame as power is going through it and powering the monitoir and speakers but no the actually base unit.
I get nothing when i hit the on button. Nothing kicks into action, no fans, no lights, etc! it is weird that the monitor and speakers get power which is why i thought that the PS was faulty cos it only had a fraction of power in it and not enough to power the computer. Am i right in thinking this?
I have also started to think that my motherboard might be faulty, is this likely?
If a computer wont do anything, what could be the problems?
does a graphics card need to be inplace for a computer to start?
It is weird cos i get nothing when i hit the on button
PLEASE HELP

What computer do you have?
I haven't seen any where the speakers and the monitor get their poer from the computer.

It must be a fairly old computer to have "unpowered" speakers and a PSU that has support for a monitor.
I'm pretty sure if you look hard enough you can still buy a pair of unpowered speakers, but they have next to zero volume. I used to have a pair in the mid-90's... they're terrible.
Also, I haven't seen a PSU with monitor support in many years.
But, I am surprised by the specs he gives.

I am having similar probelms. The only difference being my computer actually went BANG, SPARKS then SMOKE from the psu.
I have now purchased a new psu and have tested it and it works, have tried to trip the on switch to the front of computer (just in case). Have removed the video/audio cards to make sure. There is still nothing.
What would cause the working psu not to even start? Would it most likely be the MB, CPU or RAM? how would I test those without the help of another compatible computer around me for the RAM and the CPU?
cheers

Why are you posting a problem on someone elses problem, you should post your own even if it is similar. It's considered quite rude to intrude on someone else like you're doing.

Very sorry I am new to this and I did not see where to post my own question. I have figured it out and apologize again for posting on this problem - wont happen again. Promise.

While some power supply units have AC outlets on the back of the PSU, they are not powered by the PSU. They are wired in parrallel to it. This seems to be how your monitor is receiving power.
How have you determined that your speakers are receiving power? Unpowered speakers do not have a power LED. Perhaps you did not notice the power cord to one of them or, shudder, they could be battery powered.
From what's been posted so far, I can see nothing which convinces me that the problem is with the PSU. It could also be the cpu motherboard, ram or even power button.
That said, if the computer is completely dead, the power supply is a likely culprit. You could try replacing that. Just no guarantees that it will help.
