I have connected two laptops together using a cross over cable and created a home network. I can see the other computer when i open the 'network connections' box and both laptops can see each other. I have told them both to allow file sharing but when i click on the name of the other laptop it will not allow me to view that laptop and says that i may not have permission to view this network device. It mentions that i should contact the network administrator and change permissions. How do i change the setting of the network so that it will allow each computer to vire the other, rather than just recognise that the other is there?

both pcs need to have the user accounts set up the same. so say laptop one has an account called bob and he wants to access files on laptop two then laptop two also needs a account called bob. and vice versa.
and both pcs need to be in the same work group i think.

also have a we look in the sharing settings for the directorys that you want to share and make sure that account has access

sorry cant be more helpful but sharing files this way ive found to be tempremental. some times is windows throws hisy fits and cant see the other coputer some times ive found manually typing in the ip adress helps or searching for computers on network.

Ah right.
Do the accounts need to be set up on the network or just on each laptop?
Both of them are on the same workgroup. It appears as though everything is wotking correctly apart from being able to view each others files.
Cheers.

on each laptop beause the secuity check is done by the pc that files on.
in a server client network with dns server. every computer asks the server if this user should have access where as the peer to peer you have set up cant do that.so what they do is look at there own access list.

another thing to look at is the security settings on the share. i dont know if xp home has this facility but what you do is left click on the directory and go to the security tab then press add and add the account that you want access then selects its privelages and hit apply.

Map the drive, select connect as different user at bottom. Put the clients name and password in then it should connect.
