Hi a friend gave me a sata drive but as far as I know my amd machine(xp2000) is not able to connect it. A friend said something about an adapter pci card that the cable should be connected to rather than the motherboard but he didn't tell me the name of the card. The hd is a Samsung SP1614C and I got a pdf file from samsung on how to connect it but it is not very complete on info. It shows vaguely how to connect to the mb or pci adapter but the pictures are very bad and I am presuming it is an either or situation.

You can use a hard drive enclosure similar to the one shown on the above link.

Yes I had thought of that option as this drive will be for backup storage. Do you know if there are firewire versions of these hard drive enclosures? I have a firewire card with 3 ports in both my pc's.

There is such a thing available but they cost as much as a drive. Below is one link I found.

You can also install a PCI based add in SATA controller card that will allow full use of a SATA drive internally. With the right card you could even use that drive as the boot drive. Internal connections are much faster than External. If you need help with a controller card post back, asking.

Both have their place. For backup purposes external may be preferred because you can isolate the drive from the system. That helps to secure the data.

Ah yes I have seen that thing at the studio I use sometimes for proper audio production. They have a mac there and an external hard drive. Yeah money is a huge obsticle so I have to take that into account. Will go for the cheapest option. I am just doing a fresh install of windows on one machine on a 40gig hd and on this machine it has linux(40gig hd also). Both machines also have a 2nd 40gig hard drive and this is good for the immediate backups but the 160gig can have the things I really need.
So speed really isn't a problem even though I know the transfer of file might be slow compared to firewire...well it doesn't matter as I work from home and I always welcome a break from the computers.
Thanks for the advice. I will see what the prices are like on ebay for external enclosures as I have a tiny amount in my paypal account. :0)

The most cost effective method to get that drive working is to install a controller card.

Below is a link for some PCI slot based SATA controller cards.

Read the reviews on the card and decide which to buy.

You need an internal SATA connector. There are variations on these cards. RAID, SATA and IDE, more ports, etc. All you need is a basic one or two port SATA I card. The drive given to you is most likely SATA I. Even if it is SATA II the performance difference is marginal and would not be noticed. Cards that suport SATA II speeds are more expensive.

You may be interested in a dual SATA/IDE card because they support both kinds and also will support large IDE, which your computer may or may not.

Ok thanks will give it a few days before I decide but ebay is more ideal as I have a little money in Paypal. I am pretty broke otherwise.

You might also need a power adapter.

On yea, you will also need a SATA data cable, in addition to a power cable/adapter if your friend didn't give you one. I meant to link to one and forgot. They are red cables that aren't very big in diameter.

Ah yes I know what you mean. Well now it is the weekend and I don't like to go into the city. We have a lot of Asian shops there that will have everything I need. Will check on monday and in the meantime will see what the prices are like on ebay too.

Well I ended up getting an enclosure and so far I think the drive is ok. It took me a while to figure out how to format the hard drive and this is how I am doing it http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...

I hope my linux pc will see this drive when I plug it into it.

MMMmmmm may have some complication. There are two partitions and I have formatted each partition. Do I need two partitions? How do I get rid of one and make it just one block(I think that is the word?). These partitions were already on the drive when it was given to me. It is not a new drive.

If you don't have any data on the partitions then simply delete both, starting with the second one. Go to Disk Management> action> all tasks and delete both partitions. You may need to delete one before the other. Then use the same tools to create a new partition using all available space. Then format it.

OK well that seems to be working. Thanks so much. This is an area of windows that I haven't explored. This my first external hard drive.

Partitioning and formatting an External is basically the same as an Internal.
