Comment: Scenario: I have a dell (never will make that mistake again) dimension 8100. I've had it for about 3.5 years and usually keep it on straight for a few days. It was on one night and when I got up in the morning it was off with the power light blinking, I could hear a fan only. The power supply fan was on and so was another tower fan, but thats it. I tried another power supply but nothing, could this be the motherboard, even though the light on the motherboard was on? Plz help, thanks in advance! (Reposted to bump the thread)

Reply: (edit)Update: it has taken me a while to get around to trouble shooting but here are the results. The power supply that I tried was from another dell computer of the same model as mine and it still didnt work. As for listening to beeps...dells, or at least my model, dont beep they instead have 4 small lights in the back of the tower (part of the motherboard) that light up (none of the lights lit at anytime). I took all pci slots out including ram and no lights lit. I thought it was the motherboard so i replaced that (a dell oem part) and STILL NOTHING. What could it be, its driving me nuts. Thnx!

Reply: (edit)If you have had that computer running without any serious problems for 3 and half years that is pretty impressive. Anything on screen? AGP cards are picky. If no video at all pull out video card and push it back in firmly. Are the harddrives spinning? (see any HDD lights?) I wouldn't worry about pulling PCI cards out, if the system has been stable with them for the last couple years.

Reply: (edit)I suggest disconnecting all the drives and pulling all the cards except the video card.

Reply: (edit)On the Dell desktops if the diagnostic lights on the back do not light try removing all of the cards and the IDE cables. Start the system and see if there are any lights. The power switch should have a green light when pressed. The last step would be to remove the RAM and listen for beeps when starting. From what you have stated the problem sounds like the power supply has failed. Richard Lyon

Reply: (edit)Probably adware overload, download Spybot search and destroy, also try not to have programs automatically launch at start up. People normally just forget they have built up to 13 startup programs plus adware and they wonder why their brand new comp runs like a 486sx/25
