Hi.
I was working on my pc when all of a sudden the monitor went in "stand by" and the led turned orange, while the power and hdd leds remained on. I tried to move the mouse, pressed CTRL+ALT+DEl, but in vain... so I reset.
Now the computer won't boot or turn on. The fans turn on, the init on the cd-roms is done, but no initial beep and/or boot-up. The monitor remains blank and in "stand by" mode.
I tried to disconnect everything... left only the mboard, psu, cpu and ram.. but still it won't turn on and i hear no beep. The CPU is supposed to be ok coz it heats up.. not 100% sure about the RAM, but in any case I have no idea how the PSU or mboard or RAM could turn bad in a couple of seconds.. there was no power surge or anything.. and unfortunatley, i ain't got a mboard for ddr ram coz i would have tested them.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

I was browsing on the internet ... just looking around for a program...
Also, a couple of minutes ago.. coz i'm still trying to see what the prob is.. the pc beeped coz there woz no vga.. it was kind of a miracle... turned it off.. tried to turn it back on... and same prob back again.. no boot, no beeps, only fan and lights...
Whatever it is, its unstable and not permanent... until now.

...btw.
The VGA is a Geforce Ti4200 128MB DDR... thus not onboard.. and, yes the monitor cable is ok...
But the prob is not just the monitor, coz the init beep and bootup are not happening.
It just turns on the fans, inits the cd-roms and other devices and that's it.. it stops there... until I turn it off...

This happens to me too! I don't know the cause of it, but when I open things up, blow away some dust, and tighten up all my connections it works again. This has happened to me twice in the past few months at random times, usually when I'm just browsing the internet. Are you sure you're surge protector is plugged into a well grounded outlet? I'm in an old house and all my wiring is kind of shady, so I don't trust that my outlet is truly grounded. My monitor died after the massive blackout, so I'm pretty sure it's not grounded. This is the only explanation I can think of for the boot up problem.

Unfortunatley, this is not my case, since I'm sure that the power is ok... and i disconnected everything, leaving only mboard, psu, cpu and ram.. and still it won't beep.. it only turns on the fans, inits the drives and stops there...

Well maybe my conjecture was wrong then and it has nothing to do with being properly grounded. 'Cause it sounds like we have the exact same problem. Did you clean out dust and check all connections inside? Are you still having the problem today? For me, the problem went away within an hour or so.

Yes. Dismantled all the pc into parts.. cleaned everthing and redid all connections.. still, same problem. This thing started some 24 hours ago and it still goes on... :(

You had exacly the same prob as me ... so it must be the RAM that has broken down or the RAM is just lose .... try to take it out and put it in again! but i think you already done that so probably your RAM is broken...

Thanks for the help. The ram was ok. Turned out that the motherboard was faulty... altough I have no idea how this showed up after 6 months!
