i was recently givin a computer from a family member. she said the power button in front was broke and the power supply might be dead. i went by this computer i am using now since its the same case and soldered the wires according to the good switch. after hooking up, the thing didnt make a noise. so i installed an old power supply, again from this computer, and it started. only to shut off a second later. after unplugging the power supply from this one, it starts, turns off, and starts right up again. but the other kept turning off. now the only differance between them is motherboard. the other one only has a visible writing as DVAC2 and there is a red led that turns off when it is started. can anybody help me determine the problem off not turning on? and is the led light normal to stay on? the computer has been off for a few weeks so i know the boards battery is dead. thank you in advance.

The assumption about the battery is probably incorrect. I've seen a PC that was switched off for over two years and the time and date were correct within 20 minutes when it was powered up again. The old system you inherited seems to have suffered a powersupply failure. When that happens it often takes out other components when it blows. The motherboard,CPU and any cards may have been damaged. If the cpu and any cards or ram are compatible with your working system then you could swap them one at a time into the good box for testing. If they are not compatible with your good system then you might have to take it to a pc service store to have the bits tested. There's no point buying replacement parts until you work out exactly what's good/bad.
