Comment:

My computer refuses to start up. When powered on, the monitor light flashes (as though it is on but receiving no signal) and the num lock, caps lock lights flash. The cpu fan is working, and i have tried with a different hard drive and it still does this. So its not the CPU or
the Hard drive. Ive tried unplugging the cd and fdd but have the same problem. Im beyond lost.

Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Has it ever run before, or is this a new build & 1st time firing up? Do you have a P4 compatible power supply with the extra power source plugged into the board?

Its a new build (about 2 weeks old) and was working fine, but I removed the motherboard to try the case with a different motherboard. When I put it all back in, I have this problem.

Its a p4 compatible case and psu and both power plugs are plugged into the board. Its a mystery to me.

I thought that, but all fans are working, cdrom opens etc.

Could it be the way the power plugs are arranged? ie what power plugs are where? Just a stab in the dark.

Ok. What sort of damage? Could I have done it or do I have grounds for a refund here?

it was just a thought since the only thing that seems to have changed a working machine to a nonfunctional one is that the motherboard was removed and then replaced.

Same thing happend to me

Solved it by using a different IDE Cable for both my HD and Cd-ROms..

Aspire X-Dreamer II
Thermaltake 480W Silent Purepower PSU
Asus P4S800 MoBo
Pentium 4 2.6ghz @ 3.0ghz

They are on different IDE cables, is that what you mean? Or replacing the IDE cables? I will try replacing them.

hey unr3al, glad you got your system working. putting the cd-rom and dvd on seperate ide controllers worked. did that also fix the boot problems and stop errors?

i had this kinda trouble with my first pc build about a year ago, check all ide cables are the right way round, check how many beeps the pc is producing and make sure you havnt staticised (killed the parts with static) any parts.

Have you tryed taking everything out and putting together out side of the case. On i static bag, then adding parts slowly.

I was very careful about the static. If that has happened though, are the parts ruined for good?

having about same problem, exept mine starts after about 5-20 restarts...
sometimes it hangs with black screen after video card test, sometimes after ATA100 card setup, sometimes just before windows starts.
The problem is my Gigabyte GeForce FX5950 Ultra video card.
Not sure if its card itself if motherboard cant handle that card (I'm sure its not the motherboard because I've tryed on brand new one with same effect) but the fact is when I put that card in I'd better not to reboot computer, otherwise it might take a good hour untill I get back on...

Ive come to the conclusion that the motherboard is stuffed. I tried a new motherboard in the case with different components and it worked fine.

There goes $100 for a new one!

just because the fan comes on that does not mean the cpu is working

I get this problem too and believe me its not the motherboard!!

my cousin had his pc a while back, it smoked n he claimed a new 1 on the insurance, he then took the power supply outta that 1 to test it in another pc n then put it back n sum stuff smoked :(. he then bought new motherboard and graphics card for it,

Then he gave it to me to have a go @ fixing. I powered it up and had noticed that the monitor light would just flash on and off, the keyboard lights would light up for a second and go off, as motherboard was missing slots to put cables I thought it was the motherboard. So i got him to buy a new motherboard, he bought "lanparty" motherboard.

Then again, still got same error so i thought it must of been cpu, so replaced that, still same error :(.

I also had tested another hard disk and graphics card, but still same problem occoured :(.

Now I am quite annoyed with this as its cost a lot of money and still not fixed :(.
It has led me to believe its the power supply, it could of been damaged when he tried it in another machine and thats what made it smoke or as the power is only 300w the new lanparty motherboard might require a minimum of 350 watts or something higher.

other than that theres nothing else it can be, ram is brand new too, floppy disk drive and cd rom drives wouldnt matter as even if they had blown it would power on and say drive error when it loads.

This is a very odd problem and at the time of writing this the problem still hasnt resolved and i feel a bit guilty going up to my cousin saying he needs to buy a new psu cause im not 100% sure thats the problem and hes already spent £450 on parts he doesnt need.
