Hi all!

This morning I woke up and my machine was stuck on the startup screen, somewhere roundabouts the memory test - not sure exactly I was very sleepy still. ANYWAY, I pressed the power button to turn it off and deal with it later and I heard a pop! Kinda like a coke bottle popping.

Since then I havent been able to turn it on, I've changed the power supply to no avail, although I guess it still could be that. When I disconnected power to the PSU and tried a different lead I got a sparking so I turned it off on the PSU and reconnected and got nothing

Any idead people?

CHEERS!

You can test the PSU by testing the green wire for +5 Volts (DC).
If you don't have a volt meter handy, put another Power Supply in there and give it a shot. A "popping" sound is usually the power supply.

I have tried it with another PSU although I have no idea if it workd properly because I borrowed it. This had no result. The computer still refused to turn on at all.

What are the alteratives if it isnt the PSU?

Sounds to me just like a PSU dying. Sometimes they like to take out circuit breakers with them. Check your power point with another appliance.

The computer is connectedto a surge protector that has other appliances plugged in too. They all seem to work fine...

The stereo definately stills works.

I might just go out and buy a PSU tester then and see if it actually has died and if the second one i tried is a dud.

If it is dead what other problems could it be? What other reasons could there be for it not turning on now?

Cheers

I'm suspicious of the sparking you got when got when disconnecting. It sounds the PS was on and you may have damaged the motherboard.

strange, my PC did EXACTLY the same thing, I woke up yesterday morning and there was this smell like burned electric parts.
I changed out the power supply with a new one, and now it boots up to where you see the hard drives posting then hangs, no keyboard response after that. I know the power supply is good. Can it be my cpu has fried too? It is a 3.2mhz P4 overclocked to 3.5 ...I have 5 hard drives in it, but the power supply I had was 480watts. Somebody, anybody, any ideas?

take a look at the motherboard to see if any damaged components, also look at the capacitors that are can shape & see if are flat top or domed, if domed than that is causing or part of cause of problem. can be replaced as i have done it a number of times but up to you whether worth it or not & buy new board

LATEST REPORT!!!

Well heres the latest on the situation

Inow have a working PSU in the computer. I found out that the lead I had was dead so I replaced the fuse. The second lead I tested it with, the one that sparked was also dead, so I replaced the fuse. Both work fine. The PSU I am testing it with also works fine now because my front display is lighting up (powered from the mobo input via an adaptor that takes it to the front)

My computer still will not turn on, in any shape... I cant see any signs of damage on the mobo but that might just be me. My mobo is an EpoX 8RGA+ if that helps. Really worries now actually

Any help greatly appreciated
