OS: vista home premium 64 bit
CPU/Ram: amd athlon 64 x2 6000+
Comment:

I have a Gigabyte motherboard GA-MA69G-S3H which supports up to 16 GB dual channel ram (ddr2 800) and has 4 slots. The problem is it will run any 3 out of the 4 sticks (2 sets of dual channel) G.Skill F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ ddr2 800 ram but not 4. I test each of these 1 GB sticks individually and in pairs at the preset 1.8v so I know they all work. With one dual channel 2GB kit in, every part of vista 64 bit runs well. With 4 sticks however, the computer will not even post unless I raise the voltage to 2.0v (the ram box suggests from 1.8-2.0v), but then white lines often occur at startup, shutdown, and windows messages, and there are problems with sound. I tried upping the voltage to 2.05 and even 2.1. What should I do, go even higher? Thanks.

P.S. If i do not find a solution in the next week i will sell one 2x1GB kit for 50 dollars (free shipping) so if interested email me at asareyan@sps.edu

If increasing the voltage makes it work better, that makes me wonder if the power supply is possibly a little weak for your system.

I'm not saying it 'is' the power supply. But all 500 watt supplies are not created equal. If it's a cheapie and you can swap it with a better one, it might be worth a shot. That is, if you don't get another suggestion that fixes the problem.

(edit) Note that your CPU is the biggest current drain (125 watts) and maybe you have a graphics card that pulls a lot.

You try looking for a bios update?

Thanks for the replies. Bios update didn't work and I tried to get a power supply with the best reviews (60 bucks). It was not listed by the motherboard as compatable ram but the list said that there were other ram not mentioned on the list but compatable. Could compatability possibly be an issue?

Looks like someone else has the exact same problem..word for word! lol

What do you mean the BIOS update didn't work? Does that mean you weren't able to do it or you did it & it didn't fix the problem? BIOS version F4A?

Are you running a dedicated video card or the onboard video? If you're using a card, temporarily remove it, connect the monitor to the onboard, then try your 4 sticks of RAM.

With 2 RAM chips installed, go into the bios and check your voltages. Then add the other 2 and check again to make sure they are still within tolerances (+-10%).

I don't have the expertise to advise about that. But I don't like it when you have to maladjust a voltage to get something to work. I figure that there must be something else wrong.

I wasn't thinking about that voltage, I was wondering if the others, 3V, 5V, 12V, were ok.

I'm off to bed. I hope you get the answer to that weird problem.

All bios' are not the same, so it's difficult to say. You might have to go through them all. A H/W monitor screen might be the place to start.

I would say if the manufacturer has a list of approved RAM modules that is what you should use.

HERE MIGHT BE THE SIMPLE SOLUTION!!! Is it windows saying that you have 3gb and not 4gb? MAKE SURE you go into the BIOS and DISABLE all the onboard VGA stuff. Totally disable it - the bios llocates memory to your internal vga chip and then it excludes this memory from RAM.

of course i am assuming you are using an external PCI/PCIe graphics card right? if you are using on board, then its obvious why u are not seeing all 4gb... some (an amount you select on bios) is being used as VGA ram.

this link is for 64 bit systems you can find 32 bit here also ... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/... just remember to install just 2 gb first then boot into windows install this patch at the link i provided. then shut down install the other 2 sticks or 2gb memory and restart. you should be good togo.!!!!

oh i forgot to mention running 4 sticks puts a bigger stress on the memory controller. so you might not be able to run at the specified timings. ie 4,4,4,12. might have to be 5,5,5,15.
also frequencies might have to relaxed ie if your sticks are 800mhz then you might have to run them at 667 mhz. this is why you try to stay with 2 sticks. whether its 2 1gb sticks or 2 2gb sticks.but try the patch first and if still no go then must start tweaking in the bios. might want to up the northbridge alittle about .05 - 0.1 V higher then what it is now.
