Need some suggestions please. I believe it's probably a faulty motherboard, but if anyone has any ideas please comment.

Motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3:

and the CPU is the Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Brisbane AM2:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

Power supply is 600W, should be plenty since all I have hooked up is the motherboard, CPU and 2 DDR2 sticks of memory yet it still won't POST.

When I give it power, the lights and fans turn on, but about 1/2 second after everything shuts off. No beeps occur, and I did try another PSU with the same results. I've also tried remounting the HSF, and even replaced the better one I purchased with the stock fan.

What makes me believe more it's the mobo (or CPU I guess..) is that when I disconnect the ATX 12v 4pin connector, there's still no POST, but the fans all stay on. Plugging this connector back in however, causes the system to turn on then isntantly turn back off.

This system is AM2 so I don't have either a new CPU or motherboard to test, which is why I am asking for any help, though I assume I will need to soon buy a new motherboard to test...

Also, forgot to mention that I did take it out of the case to test it as well. Obviously had the same results...

I don't think it will help, but pull the RAM and also any cards, including a video card if there is one. If you get error beeps, that would indicate that the motherboard and CPU are probably ok.

You could take the MB/CPU in to a shop to have them tested.

The ATX12v 4-pin plug supplies power to the CPU. The board will not POST without it.

Tell us about your PSU. 600W doesn't mean much. Is it a decent brand name unit or an el cheapo generic? What are the amperage ratings on the +3.3v, +5v & +12v rails?

After seeing the specs & what you paid, my guess would be the cheapo OKIA power supply is your problem. The 50A rating on the +5v rail is a dead give away. Loading up on the underutilized +5v rail is a "trick" (scam) some PSU manufacturer's use to falsely inflate the wattage rating of their units. The +5v rail on that PSU accounts for 250W of the total. At best, your PSU should have a 400W rating.

A decent 600W PSU normally sells for $75 or more. For example:

Do you have another PSU you can try?

Thanks Jam. Sorry for the quick post earlier, tried doing it really quick before I had to leave for work.

Anyways, I bought that PSU because in the Customer Reviews a lot of people had close or similiar specs. I figured since I only had the Mobo and CPU plugged in 600W would be fine. I never really found a good site to explain all the things about the PSU so it's one of the few parts I can't really compare/contrast with.

I did test another PSU, but it IS a cheapo one that came with a case I bought a couple years ago.(says 450w max load) The same thing happens on that one. I assumed a bad PSU would have at least gotten a POST, but maybe random reboots/crashes once I got windows loaded. I am also currently running an 8800GTS off the 450w PSU with no problems, so if it can handle this card I really feel the 600w PSU would be able to power just a mobo and CPU, not that I'm ruling the PSU out.

Still stuck with the question of what piece I need to replace. Would the CPU give similiar problems, or would it at least POST and then give errors? Need to get the ball moving on an RMA since they only give you so much time...

As an update, talked to Gigabyte and was told to try taking the CPU and heatsink out as well. Still wouldn't stay on for longer than half a second, so it has to be the mobo or PSU.

Tested it as well on my second PSU with no luck, and they agreed that if that doesn't work it can't be the PSU, it shouldn't be using nearly that much power. So, hopefully it has to be a bad motherboard. Guess I'll have to RMA it and hope the next one is better. Thanks guys.

Looking for an update. I've got the same board and the same problems. Do I need to go ahead and call NewEgg and RMA. Can you save me some time?
