Hi,

I got this computer from a friend that didn't post although the power supply was operable and cpu fan spun up. Also the hard drive would initially spin up but for a brief moment, however, I would never be able to get it to POST nor would I get any audible POST codes.

I tested the power supply, and memory, stripped the computer to its bare essentials and finally decided to pull the CPU. The CPU was burnt as was a diode that rests under the CPU. (How the CPU lasted as long as it did w/o any thermal paste applied between the CPU and the heatsink amazed me).

Anyways, I ordered a replacement CPU and motherboard for a small price and thought the problem would be easily solved. However, it wasn't. With the new components, I still get the same response, trying different memory modules, power supplies, video cards, etc.

Either I got another bad motherboard and/or CPU or I'm completely overlooking something.

Your insight would truly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

Congratulations Tony!

The last person with a similar problem got to nabout 15 posts before we knew the information you have provided.

It seems you have ruled out almost everything else, so mother or CPU is likely.

First of all, check the motherboard settings.

Secondly, ensure the the motherboard is not being accidently grounded. Extra mounting point etc.

make sure the 'clear comos' jumper on the board is on pins 1-2

Thanks,

I've bench tested the board, so a short is unlikely and the system's jumpers and dip switches are set to the default settings and the cmo's has been reverted to default.

Tomorrow, I'll test the CPU in another working system, and I'll swap out processors.

Yes, it sure is a pleasure to see a post where all the important information is there and the poster didn't ramble on and on.

Hi,

Thanks guys,

tried the processor on another board and it booted finely. Found out it's the motherboard. Damn, I hate E-bay.
