I built a computer today and it has been on most of the afternoon, but starting about 45mins ago it started turning itself off and then restarting.

It continued getting more frequent and now when i press the power button the fan starts and the power and hdd led on the from of the computer blinks and the cd-rw light stays on.

does anyone know why this may be happening.

if anyone can help i would appriciate it.

It sounds like you may have an overheating problem. Let things cool down for an hour or two and see is its OK again. If so, post back for help with overheating.

Check the cpu cooler. They can be installed backwards and not maintain contact with the cpu. This will cause overheating. It can also damage the processor core!

Hi,

I turned the cooler round and started the computer up.

it started up and i out the power on password in and then it crashed? everytime i started it up it would only just get past the password and would crash.

I think the processor must be knackered, will have to see if i can replace it tommorow.

before you replace the cpu...try the power supply...

what PSU do you have?

2 x 512 Geil Ultra Platinum PC4000 @ DDR500
128 meg Radeon 9800 Pro
DUAL 36 GIG WD Raptors RAID0
21 in. 19.8 viewable Sony Trinitron
4 Mbps cable

If you look, it is obvious which way the heatsink should fit. There is a cutout for the raised part of the socket. Just make sure that you didn't reinstall it the wrong way around!

If you installed software while the cpu was overheating, there is a good probability that you corrupted the software and it might require a reinstall.

Hi

I had the heatsink on the right way the first time so it wasnt that.

following Tbird4point6LX97 advice i tried a different power supply from an older computer and the system is now working.

I will leave it on for a while and see if it stays ok.

But i would like to say thanks for all your help, better than any tech support phone line.

Kind Regards

Try unplugging everything, ribbons and power, from all devices except the hard drive and boot up after the PC is sufficiently cool. If successful with the drive then you can start connecting other devices to rule out bad hardware. I had a CD ROM that wouldn't allow a Cpq EVO to boot until it was completely disconnected.
