I tried swapping a harddrive with one that i know is good... still no progress/// you mean it wont read the newer harddrive in the cmos setup either? now while booting and just before the bios page comes up press delete key or f1 or f2 and see if that hardrive is the cmos setup, if not try resting the cmos jummper on the motherboard or take ut the battery for a few minites when the machine is off and then reboot and try the f8 key for safe mode.

very strange you said //When u turn it on the bios screen comes up,// that means you can read the screen for a second or two correct or negative? but then you said you get a flashing curser black screen, thats confussing in what you are saying ? if this happeins the bios is corrupted big time and maybe a bios virus wipe it out. but then you said also that she heard a mechanical noise this points to the *floopy* thus if the floopy fail, and went into a loop of sorts, the bios would hang and and as it trys to come into installit would then crash because the Floppy is not working, and that noise point to it.bios boot info http://www.ontrack.com/hardwareinfo/startup.asp

The bios comes up, then it goes to a black screen like its about to boot the os...but it doesnt. The floppy (not floopy lol) drive is fine, i replaced it with a working one, and still the same problem.
