I have the following configuration I've put together:

Asus A8N SLI Premium motherboard
Athlon 64 X2 4400 dual core processor
Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT DVI graphics card
Western Digital SATA 320GB HD
Aerocool Modular 550W power supply
Zalman CNPS7700 CPU cooler
G.SKILL Extreme Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM
Unbuffered DDR 500 (PC 4000) Dual Channel Kit System Memory
Acer AL1916 19" LCD monitor

I push the power button and the only thing that starts up is the CPU cooler fan, the system won't boot up, monitor says "no signal". This is probably REALLY stupid.

I've always bought bare bones systems to start with, first time starting from scratch. I read in the mobo manual "don't forget to connect the 4-pin ATX+12 V power plug or the system won't boot". I have the 24-pin power connector plugged in, I SEE the 4-pin ATX+12 V connector on the mobo. The power supply I have has individual plugs for each item (so I can just use the ones i want). I have one cable that came with the power supply that has an eight pin connector on one end, and two individual 4-pin connectors on the other end. I have one eight-pin plug-in on the power supply that says it's for "P8 to P4 + P4 cable" Is that the cable I'm supposed to use to connect the "ATX+12V" on the mobo to the 8-pin plug in on the power supply? I at least have the smarts to not plug it in if I'm not sure!

I know you said that you just hear the fans but do you hear the HD spinning? If you do, try a different monitor. I've seem them go bad and still give the "no signal" error.

My computer's fans will all spin up if I do NOT plug in the 4-pin 12V plug next to the CPU. Of course the computer does not boot up either. BUT, if I DO plug it in then it seems to short out and nothing will startup. I just installed a new cpu fan, a thermaltake blue orb II. At one point I shifted my PSU around and everything booted up into winxp64. After arranging the cords and the PSU again it shorts out again. I've retried everything I did before but can not get it to startup. It shorts immediately upon hitting the power button.

What would cause it to short out only when the 12V 4 pin connector is plugged in?
