Computer wont boot past hdd detection

Specs: Windows xp, P4 3GHZ 2GIG RAM
Every time i attempt to start my pc it stops after hdd detection, with no post beep.
Sometimes i have to switch off and on several times,but still no boot. Ocasionaly it would start but next time on boot it would pack up agian.

Any help would be great
I have working on pcs since 1986 but have never had this before.

It is either a failing hard disk of faulty memory.

You can download a hard disk diagnostic from the hard disk manufacture and a memory test from Memtest86. Both can be run from CD.

Thanks i will see if it works, i would also add that it always hangs before Windows logo
