Computer wont boot past bios

Specs: Windows Vista
Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 530s desktop computer, which I turned off a previous night, it was working fine woke up next day and it doesn't start up properly. I am completely clueless about computers but I manage to fix them somehow by googling it but Ive tried this time and cant seem to find anything. Basically I turn the computer on it starts up fine and it loads the bios page, which says bios revision, intel , f2 and f12 menu etc... but it wont go any further than that. The computer seems to be working fine, i just cant get on to the login page. If I try to press F8 or F2 or anything it wont work, so I cant even enter safe mode. I'm worried if I have to completely reset the computer cos I have some work on the computer which I need to keep saved and dont have a back up copy including family pictures and stuff and I really dont want to loose any of that. What to do, anyone?
