Hi,
I have problem with boot up from old HD that works perfect on old machine.
Actually, I have two HD and two machines. I installed win 2003 on the drive which came with new machine(AMD 2000+). The second drive has win 2000 pro(Celeron 800). Both disks works perfect. But when I try to change a new disk with old one (in a new machine) system can't boot, and I get the message: "Searching for Boot Record from IDE0..OK". I tried all possible combinations with this old drive and new machine, including disconecting all hardware, clearing CMOS,... but non of them is working.
Please help if you have any idea what could cause the problems.

Thanks.

Mensud

HI not sure if im reading your post correctly. You are trying to put a hdd (will call old hdd) with Win2000pro into a different comp, and you can not boot? Are you trying to boot from the old hdd or put it in as slave?

"Searching for Boot Record from IDE0..OK". "
that message is saying it found and will try to boot to IDE0 -- need more info , after above message , what happens or is displayed?

"If you are trying to boot from old hdd you will have problems! You will need to put it back into old comp and delete its hardware profile, some one else can tell you how!

Yes, I am trying to booy from an old HD.
The new system doesn't boot up with an old HD. When I put this HD in old machine, everything is OK.
I tried with this HD as master, slave and without any PCI cards,... and I still get the same message.

HI
Do you know if the old hdd has a drive overlay on it? IF it does and the new comp does not need it , that is the problem.
might help if we know what size hdds you have?
Other wise put old hdd in as slave on pri. IDE or better to put it as master on sec. IDE
be sure all jumpers on both hdd are correct and in the bios setup both hdd's are detected correctly.

Mensud - Sometimes people try to do things that may not be necessary. You failed to say 'why' you would be wanting to use an old HD in a new workable PC. If the reason is to acheive more working space, then I would use TopFarmer's suggestion using the old HD as a slave or secondary unit.
If you would mention a problem you may be having that is causing you to do what you are trying to do, there may be an alternative rather then to use an old HD to boot in a new workable PC. So... why is it that you are trying to do this? (with much curiousity), James

Hm... Why do I want to use old HD? Because I have a lot of important data on that disc which is FAT32 file system. A new disc is NTFS file system, and as you know, I can't see partitions with FAT32 FS from NTFS. That is the reason.
If you know any program that gives the ability of reading FAT32 from NTFS, that would be great. Until than, ... I have to keep resolving this problem.

Hi I do think with a NTFS OS you can see and use Fat32 files , but can not go the other way. A fat32 OS will not see NTFS disk.
It is backward campatable. IF it is only data putting old hdd as slave is best, you should have no problems. if it is programs that is a different matter.

But I already tried to use the disk with FAT32 as slave disc, and nothing. I could not see this disc in explorer, and when I run Computer Management->Disc Management in Control Panel, I can see this disc, but Volume column is empty, and File System column is also empty. Only what I can do is formating.

HI I could be wrong but I'm sespecting it might have a disk overlay on it. Not sure how to uninstall it, to check do below.

Try going in to bios setup and write down the heads, sectors, clyiders and size reported, do this in both comps. If old comp bios setup reports different data than new comp post back what each reports. If the old comp reports a smaller hdd than it is, it does have a overlay on it.

I can not even guess whats going on. I only have win98. If you have a CD R,W drive, would put hdd back into old comp and save all your data while its still there before something is done and data is lost.

Does Win 2000 have a boot floppy with DOS? IF so with bad hdd in new comp, use boot floppy and see if you can read the drive's
directory that might point to a hardware or software problem.

Have you tried putting bad hdd as master on secendary IDE contoler?
