I have a HP computer. Last week all the USB ports quit working. This week the computer will not power up. It has a 150 watt atx power supply. the little green led on the outside of the power supply lights up when the power cable is plugged into receptacle. I took the power supply out and jumped out the pins 4 and 6 and the fan came on and the proper voltages were present at the output power connnectors. When i reinstalled the power supply no fans ran and no power at the power connectors. I took the wires off the power on switch on the front of case and jumped them out but no luck still no start up. I have unplugged every device connected to motherboard CD roms, hard drive, floppy disk and still no power up. What do i do next. the computer is just out of warranty. Could the motherboard be bad? Thanks in advance
I would try another power supply. 150w is on the small side to say the least. See if you can pick up one to try and if it works go for something like 350w or 400w. Having said that, most ATX power supplies use one of the red wires to sense the 5v line on the mother board. If it cant find exactly that voltage, the psu will remain powered off. This would indicate a motherboard fault. Try a different power supply first. Good luck ChrisE
HI and thanks for the quick response. I have tried another known good power supply in the computer and it would not power up either. but i keep having this nagging thought about the hard drive.......will the puter try to power up if the hard drive is bad??? i am lost here now... thanks in advance
