Hello,

I am building a computer and for the life of me cannot get the thing to power on! The power supply is working as I swapped it with another machine and I even replaced the motherboard. I click the power switch and absolutely nothing happens. Any idea?

Did you already install everything in the case or are you benchtesting?

If you aren't bench testing, you should definetly do that.

Recheck the power switch pinout on motherboard. Or maybe a good idea to benchtest first.

Benchtest as in operate on minimal components? I'm only on motherboard and processor right now.

"Benchtest as in operate on minimal compnents?"

Benchtest as in nothing is installed in the case. Motherboard, power supply, etc are laying on the bench & you're testing them to make sure they work. Hence the term, benchtest.

"I'm only on motherboard and processor right now"

Hopefully you have a heatsink installed? memory installed? Plus a video card (or onboard video) & a keyboard connected?

Yeah, heatsink and fan on the processor. How am I supposed to power on the components without a case switch connected to the power switch header?

"How am I supposed to power on the components without a case switch connected to the power switch header?"

All you need to do is momentarily touch the blade of the screwdriver to the 2 pins the power switch would normally connect to & the board *should* fire up....

If you don't know what he means, then I'll draw a little ASCII picture...

[Res][other
[PWR]jumpers]

- = Jumpers

Use a flat screwdriver to touch ONLY the pwr jumpers. It should be clearly labeled.

Make sure you have everything plugged in too.

I have something similar. When the power switch is turned on the fans start. No beeps, no video, the keyboard lights flash in their normal test. The hard drive does NOT spin up.
If I switch off, pull the IDE cable for HDD and starts the computer again the driver spins up.
removed floppy, removed CD, unplugged key boards and mouse, removed memory all with the sameresult each time.

Tried different power supplies, even went and brought a second hand mother board but same result no matter what power supply combination.

Pulled reset cable off connection to mother board, no difference.

all voltages from the power supply are as per the pin connections. Power good or Ok is a 5V and the power on connection is at 0 when the power button is pushed on.

Ive built a number of computers over the years and never not had one go till now. I guess there is a first time for everything.

Any ideas. It is almost as if a reset line is being held in the reset state all the time
I am not sure what the power good signal should be for normal operation 5V or 0 V?

I have also removed the PCB from the case and tried it.

Any ideas? Thanks

GRS
