Subject: Computer unable to detect harddrive
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: 2.8MHz/1gb
Comment:

I recently purchased a new 200gb Western Digital harddrive from a local vendor. The problem is that whenever I connect the drive, my computer is unable to detect it. POST screen and bios both say there is no drive attached at IDE 0. I have checked to make sure it is connected correctly and have tried several jumper settings (Master, CS, and open). I currently have an Asrock 775i65g motherboard with a 2.8MHz dual core processor and 1gb RAM. When I tried the hdd in an old ECS board, I encounter the same thing. Is there some obvious solution that I'm overlooking? Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Why not return the Western Digital HD to the vendor and get a replacement if it is new?
Other than that, I would suggest calling the HD tech support as they should give you an idea what to try. I'm sure they will have a few ideas, it may be just a simple solution.

Enter the BIOS screens and be sure ALL IDE controllers are enabled and that you have configuration settings for ALL IDE devices set to Auto. You need to use an 80 wire IDE cable and of course connect a power coneector as well.

Look here for some infromation on 48bit LBA compliance. http://www.48bitlba.com/index.htm

Hi there....I have the following message on my screen as soon as I turn on my computer:

Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-2
Drive 3 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE Slave)

Type the system password and press <ENTER>
Enter password:
HERE IS WHERE MY PROBLEM IS!

I can't type anything. I try to put the system password in and it does not allow me to. What can I do to either type the password in or bypass this whole situation? Thanks very much for any help you can give me.

My BIOS has both IDE controllers enabled, and I know they work. I plugged in a 6 gig drive I had laying around and it works fine. All devices connected are set to auto. I'm going to see if the new drive works when set to slave mode and the 6 gig (with XP Pro) to master. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try WD support and keep looking for a solution.

Yes I agree this is probably your jumper settings on the back of the hard drive, check one of the black small plastic jumpers has not come off accidentaly, check manufacturers site for correct or default settings

I've searched the WD knowledge base, here is the link for jumper setttings:

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc...

As my drive is 10-pin, I've tried shorting pins 6 and 4, 5 and 6, 1 and 2, and I've left it open as well. All this was when it was attached to IDE0 at the master connection.

Setting my 6 gig to master and the WD to slave I got my computer to boot after two tries, but it still doesn't read.

More and more I'm becoming convinced the drive itself is bad. I'm going to get with the shop that sold me the drive and see if they can test it for me, and if necessary, replace it. Thanks for the support everyone.
