Computer turns off when cd is inserted

Specs: Windows XP
I have no idea whats going on! As soon as i insert a cd into my computer the screen goes black, then tries to boot from the cd. this screen stays up until i take out the disk, at which point the computer restarts. Any ideas anyone?

What type of cd are you putting in if it wants to boot?

This happens with any cd i insert, and the computer wont turn back on until i take it out.

No this doesnt seem to apply, when the cd is inserted the screen goes black and says "Boot from cd :" however if u press any keys it will go black again and return to the message.

Did this system ever operate correctly with that CD drive installed in it?

Is the CD drive a SATA model?
