I am trying to work on someone's custom made computer and everytime I go to switch on the power, I get nothing. There is a switch on the power supply. I turn that on...the harddrive starts, CD rom works, and harddrive L.E.D. come on. I hit the power, and nothing.
The motherboard is an ATX A161 w/ soft switching (not sure what that is). There are no jumpers on the board.
Could it be the switch that is not working.
I'm not familiar with cases that allow you to turn on the power supply first, where the hardrive and CD-rom are powered on...then hitting the main power switch on the front panel. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply!
I don't have the system in front of me right now, because I'm at work. I do remember there were 5 wires coming from the switch/front panel area to the motherboard.
1 PWR LED
1 SPKR
1 RST (Hardware Reset)
1 HDD LED
1 PW_ON (ATX Power On/Off Switch Connector)I believe the wires leading to the front panel were coming from the power supply, but i'll have to double check.
Thanks

Can you switch the machine off with the power button? Try that, then try switching on with the button.

OK...just came from downstairs working on it.
The power switch on the front panel will turn the machine on. HD runs, CD rom as well. But no system checks come on.
I can then turn the computer off my holding the power button in for about 3 seconds. Basically I'm missing the CMOS portion.
Any ideas???
Thanks!!

What happened to make this PC stop working correctly?? Power outage, storm?? What was the guy doing when it stopped working??
try the usual things - make sure monitor is on and connected. Is it a good monitor?? Next comes the video card. is it working??

The monitor is turned on. Not sure about the video card working.
But the thing is, I don't hear any beeps, no memory check...nothing.
Could the CMOS be bad???

Did you check the voltage selector on the rear of Power Supply? Is it set for the correct voltage? Also, switch back and forth in case its not completely engaged. (Unplug unit first) Good Luck.

Checked the voltage setting and still nothing. In fact when I switched the setting, nothing was powering up so I switched it back 110 instead of 220.
Thanks for the reply!
Still stumped, though.

the only other thing i can think of is the CPU is fried or something on the mobo got fried. Do you have another CPU you can try??

Unfortunately, I do not have another K7 processor. I think a friend of mine might have one, then I could swap his in there. Is there any way to tell physically on the pocessor itself if it has been damaged??
I've checked the mobo for damage to any foil patterns...but could find nothing.
