Computer stuck in restart loop

Specs: Windows 8 Dev
I have an eMachines desktop that attempts turns on by itself and gets stuck in this turn on/restart mode.

Basically the computer will sit in idle/sleep mode for hours and then out of nowhere it will turn on (the screen lights up, log in screen loads), as if someone touched a key or moved the mouse, then it will try to restart. It turns off without a problem, however, when it tries to turn back on it gets stuck. As soon as the screen goes black I can hear the hard drive (just like when you turn on the computer at any other time) then the screen turns on (for probably less than a second) and the lights on the keyboard flash for a second, then it turns off.

It can do this all day. The only way to stop this and turn it back on is by unplugging it from the outlet and then plugging it back in and manually pressing the power button.

The weird thing about it though is that it will do this for a few days at a time, anytime I leave it in sleep/idle/hibernate mode. Then it will stop and the computer will work just fine for the next few months and then again it will start this restart loop again. I've had this happen about four times this year. Each time about 3-4 days.

Anyone experience this? Can I replace anything (hd?, motherboard?) to get it to stop this?

I had a similar issue and the hard drive was to blame at my end.

It looks like that is my only option too.

Thanks for responding. I'll update this thread after I replace the hard drive if that works.
