Before you go off willy nilly and buy parts how about some history of the computer.

Did this just happen all of a sudden or were there problems prior to this condition?

Was there any interruption in the power to the computer or any lightning storms recently?

What prompted you to replace the power supply? Post the model of the new power supply and the model of the computer or if custom built, the motherboard.

Was anyone inside the case mucking around prior to this problem?

i took back the power supply when it still didnt work. and the computer has run just fine for a couple of years. i went out of town for a few months, took the hard drive out because my dad likes to snoop. (not that there is anything i need to hide) when i came back i put in the hd pulgged it in and black screen.

The computer should not immediately start when you plug it in. It didn't do that before did it?

If not then the first thing to check is a stuck power or reset button on the case. Sometimes the buttons can get on an angle and not pop back out. If there is no travel in either button then than could be the problem.

Is this a branded computer like Dell, Gateway, etc?
