Computer Starts, No Signal on Monitor

Specs: Windows XP
Computer starts up. If I turn the power button on and off on the monitor, I get a pic for about 2 sec. then it is gone. So I have read some posts and one said to turn off the computer and restart and hit F8 for about 20-30 seconds which I did and the monitor came on and off several times but no longer than about 2 sec. I did disconnect the cables and put them back in. I have rebooted several times. So, then I disconnected the cable from the back of the tower and connected it to my lap top and the picture does come up on the monitor from lap top but again for only about 2 sec. Then it is gone. Do you think it is the monitor or could it be something to do with the computer? Thank you!

Since you tried it on more than one computer, I would say it's the monitor.
