While I can do non graphics intensive things such as web surf and even play older games, if I start up a new, 3D one my computer makes this crackling/scratching noise for a few seconds before shutting off. I can't quite isolate from which part this noise is emanating, but the correlation is unmistakable.

My power supply is an Ultra X-Connect 500W ATX PSU. My video card is an 8800GTS.

I have been unable to see if this problem would still occur without using the current video card because my motherboard has no onboard video. This problem only cropped up yesterday by the way, I have never had this issue in the past, though I've had trouble with the power supply shutting off randomly due to (I think) loose cables since I bought the computer 3 years ago on and off, though I haven't suffered from this in quite some time.
