computer shuts off and restarts with no scree

July 28, 2011 at 11:11:06
Specs: Windows 7 64 bit, Intel i5-2500k @ 3.30Ghz 4 Gb RAM
Computer will go into a black screen with a blinking line in the top left of the screen. When I try to reboot it just keeping going through a cycle of rebooting and there is nothing on the screen.

I think it may be the screen that is causing the error but if I leave the system off for a couple of minutes it will turn on and be usable.

It only seems to go into this black screen mode when the system is idle because when I am playing games it doesn't happen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hmm, could be a tricky one to sort out.

You said it only happens when the computer is idle and the monitor goes to sleep.
You can play games for hours without any problems?

1) A bad screen saver can cause chaos.
- Change or disable your screen saver & see if that helps.

2) A device or it's driver may not be letting the computer sleep and resume properly.
- Try disconnecting ALL non-essential devices (especially USB devices) and test.

3) The video card or video driver is causing a similar sleep issue.
- Remove and re-install your video drivers. If you can: test with a "known-good" video card.

4) Disable Sleep & Hibernation in Power Management & see if that helps.

5) Your BIOS' power saving or ACPI settings have changed since you installed Windows.
- Change the related BIOS/CMOS settings back to their defaults (if possible).

Could it be something with the monitor? My monitor has been having some troubles lately.
