The video card/video adapter/video board is where you plug the monitor in to the computer. Most motherboards have one built in but you can add a card (usually if you want better video).

That's for desktop PC's. I guess we haven't established if you have a laptop or desktop computer. If it's a laptop it should have an external video port where you can connect a separate monitor.

As Mike recommended, have you tried another monitor? I assume you have. My suggestions were based on you still having the problem AFTER trying another monitor.

I think the problem is with the video adapter but it could be some general failure with the motherboard itself or even something we haven't thought of yet.

Three fast things to try.

check the connections to your monitor, or to a second monitor
Ctrl alt del, see if a task manager comes up
try starting back up in safe mode.

If it's not the monitor or its connections then it sounds like it might be a video adapter/card failure. When you first turn it on do you get the normal posting or logo screen or do you only see the green and pink stripes?

If it's on-board video try adding a video card, even a cheapo one, and see if you get proper video. If you're already using a card but also have an on-board video port, remove the video card and use the on-board and see if that makes a difference.
