Hi my pc has a problem wich it had when i built it a few months back it randomly restarts i have had alot of help trying to solve this problem from another member on the forum (jam) but nothing has worked and im running out of ideas heres a list of things ive tried.

1)changing psu
2)swapping ram
3) xfx found no problems with my graphics card
4) ive tried windows xp but it still restarted
5)borrowed another cpu
6)made sure everything is cooled proper i have an antec 900 that has 4 fans so they should keep the inside cool
7)cleaned registry with glary utilities
8)swapped hdd
9)also tried reinstlling vista numerouse times and installed all the latest drivers.
10) checking the voltage in bios and changing some settings
11) checking the cpu and gpu and ram temp but the temperatures are fine
12)also i have check there is no grounding problem between the case and the motherboard
but none of the above has worked
although when i tried running ubuntu off disc instead of hdd it ran for 6 hours with out so much as a crash but i swapped the hdd and it made no difference.

also the restarts are more frequent now restarting when i open a program or even during boot up but when i install vista it seems to restart at a certain point at the end of the installation but once restarted continues as normal.

im really not sure what to try next any help would be appreciated thank you.

heres my specs.
mainboard: gigabyte n650sli-ds4l
op system: vista home premium 32bit
psu: corsair tx750w
graphics card: xfx 8800 gts 512mb g92
ram:corsair xms 2gb
cpu:core 2 quad q6600 2.4ghz
case:antec 900
cpu fan: asus arctic square

also i have not tried to overclock anything.

The restarts are much more regular now and happen when a simple program is opened or even if i leave it on desk top.

Did you go to system properties, advanced, startup and recovery and uncheck automatic restart?

I have run into some intermittent problems caused by spread pins in the power cable connectors (especially 'Y' adapters). Try another power supply.

Also, if you have an optical drive, try disconnecting it and running without it for a while.

Oops, I read right over the fact that you have changed the power supply. I assume that you aren't using any 'Y' power cables.

I read your post a little more carefully, and the fact that the Vista install does an unexpected restart bothers me. I don't trust an install that doesn't go perfectly. Is it possible to try an install of another OS on the hard drive? I wonder if there is a problem with the CD that's slipping past the error checks.

Running Ubuntu off the CD works fine. Which would 'tend' to eliminate everything on the motherboard, with the 'possible' exception of the hard drive controller > windows interface.

I guess it's possible that there is some kind of incompatibility between XP/Vista and the graphics card. Pretty unlikely.

Or a real far fetched theory. Two pieces of hardware causing the same symptom, so when you swapped one out the other still caused the problem.

How about hooking everything up with the motherboard outside of the case. I'm grasping at straws.

"I'm grasping at straws"

I'm been trying to help simmo with his problem for weeks, both thru the forum & thru PM's. We must be overlooking "something". The Ubuntu Live CD working without a problem really threw us a curve but your thought about the HDD controller is another yet possible culprit that should be looked into.

simmo, I believe you have an SATA HDD? Any chance of trying a PATA/IDE HDD?

I'm wondering if the Bios was ever set to the default settings.

I'm also kinda curious about the temperature readings (case, CPU & GPU). Was running with the case open ever tried?

I would really like to try hooking everything up outside the case.

ive already had a look around temperature wise and everything seems fine but now you mention it about hdd i was wondering around bios and for some reason it says my hdd is on IDE 10 but its plugged in with a sata cable.

also the mobo says is supports core 2 quad so that should be fine my graphics card can be used with vista and the mobo is vista rdy (so they say)but as jam said there is definetly something thats being overlooked and tbh it seems like any amount of replacements or drivers wont solve it.

I'm having the same problem. Originally It was overheating so I sent in my motherboard and processor. Now it works fine and the temp if fine. I shouldn't say it works fine, because everytime at start up I either get an infinite loop of pressing "enter" to continue and restart or I get a blue screen. Sometimes it just doesnt load anything at all and its just a black screen from start up. Everything is new so that wouldnt be a problem. (I literally have tried everything you have tried so I'm trying to maybe offer a solution or maybe tell you something you should try. No idea)

I think something is just plugged in wrong im my system, maybe something in yours is?
