I'm a relative novice here. This morning powered up my computer and all has power, but computer won't boot up at all. The monitor says override, as if it's waiting for me to turn it on. Suggestions? The computer is only 2 years old.....

My suggestion would be spend 5 more minutes typing more about the problem so that we can help you. You haven't given us near enough information. In your next post answer these questions:
1. What exactly does the screen say... EXACTLY
2.Does the computer beep? How Many times?
3.Have you installed any new software OR hardware, or made any system settings changes? This is the hardest for people to admit, but most of the time the problem occurs because of some silly change to the PC.
4.When you turn on the PC tell us word for word, step by step what happens.
After you do the following you will find your answer ALOT faster, good luck, post back...

Hi, sorry --

Press power button. Fan goes on, cd lights come on as usual, no beep.

Monitor stays blank and displays "override" as if it's waiting for me to turn on the computer, it does this if I turn on the monitor without powering up computer. All peripherals power up fine as well.

Have not added anything hardware or software, wouldn't know how.

Just unplugged the battery from the motherboard and am waiting about 10 minutes, then will plug back in and try to power up again.

Basically when I turn on the computer, all peripherals work, spin, etc, just no beep and the monitor doesn't display anything but the "override" message.

Forgot the system settings changes et al.

Definitely no new hardware.

I meant to install new software last weekend for my digital camera, but haven't gotten around to it yet, so no software.

System setting changes, don't know how to do that, but I know my computer has been taken over by cool web search. I had to restore in DOS from aprevious registry last month, early novemeber, and added Zone Alarm at that time. IE hasn't worked since, monitor resolution has deteriorated, etc. When I run SpyBot or AdAware it cleans out the registry etc from the Malware, but overall, nothing has changed in well over a month.

I did vacuum off the back outside casing of the computer a week and a half ago.

Worked great yesterday, no differences in shut down. Just *nothing* today.

check your connections from your monitor to your video card... also if you have another video card, give that a try

Okay...sigh... I unplugged the battery from the motherboard, waited 10 mins, plugged back in and monitor is still in "standby" mode. No beep.

Then unplugged the HD, tried to fire up again, same problem, no beep, monitor in standby.

You `probably' have a defective motherboard or CPU. To narrow it down for sure, disconnect all the drives and pull all the cards. If you still do not get a beep then you can be sure that it's either the motherboard or CPU.

Ok, dont listen to what these people have told you, it won't get you anywhere. The problem is one of two things. It is either the video card, or it is the monitor. You say "monitor resolution has deteriorated, etc" This is a sure sign that one of the two I listed is going bad. Do this to fix it. People are to quick to open up the PC case, and chances are your gunna mess something else up inside there. Try a monitor that you know works, or if you can't get one try your monitor on a PC that you know works. If the monitor will work on a different PC then it is obviously the video card. No beeps gaurentees a hardware problem. The PC does a POST at bootup. (Power on self test) which verifies that all the hardware is working. If no beeps, then something is wrong. Also I had a monitor once that said that to, and if I turned the monitor off, then back on, it worked fine! Doubt that will do it, but try it. Also, make sure there is only ONE monitor plug in on the computer, it may be plugged into a video card which is disabled (like a onboard video, upgraded to a slot video card) Seriously, do what I have said, it will fix it. If you still have problems reply back with what has happened when you tried this stuff. Good luck. Let us know if you got it to work or what please!

Well, I have no idea, must've been dust or something, perhaps a loose connection somewhere. Unplugged everything from the motherboard (wish I had known about the video card/monitor before going through everything, probably was that) blew out all connections with air, plugged all back in and the thing powered up, beeped and has been working ever since. Thanks for all the advice, it was invaluable! I have had computers for years on end with no problems and it seems like a never ending string of little things with this one....
