Computer powers on but won't start

Hi guys I have a problem with my computer. What happens is whenever I turn on on the power-strip which the comp is connected to, the computer will boot on (the fans start spinning and it beeps) but no OS. Same thing happens if I plug it into a regular wall socket. For a while I was able to temporarily fix it by resetting the Bios (either using the Bios Switch or by taking out the bios battery), afterward it would work. Sometimes it will turn on but then just shuts off randomly. Do you guys think its a hardware problem or software? Maybe the Power-supply or the Mobo are going bad?

So does it try to start up as soon as you plug it into the mains power or do you then hit the startup button to initiate bootup?

You may have a powersupply problem since from your description this is an emachine you're talking about and they are notorious for crappy low end PSUs.

That is usually the best starting point when trying to diagnose these issues. Get a good quality known working PSU and see if that makes a difference.

Hi Richard59, yes it powers on right away without even pressing the start-up button. I'm thinking about taking it to get checked but wanted to have an idea of what it might be first.
