I have a Compaq Presario 7940. About 2 weeks ago we had a storm go through and a power surge hit, lightning struck next door. When I went to start up the computer it would power up but it acts like it is in sleep mode. My father said it sounds like it is the power supply or the motherboard is fried. The fan is running so is it the motherboard? If so does anyone know of where I could check for prices on motherboards for compaq computers?

after looking at the prices for a replacement
motherboard for your compaq, it was listed upwards of $400.
you can get a compaq Presario 5011CL
for $479. from computergeeks.com (no monitor
or other peripheals included) use the ones
you have. or shop around for another pc
the replacement parts are higher then
a new asustek motherboard with a p4 cpu.

Before you do anything, take the much, much cheaper route, and simply replace the power supply. It's not a big deal to do that, and you can find them online for as little as $40 bucks. More than likely, the PS fried, and not the mobo.
We had lightning strike next door to us last year and we have 7 running computers at all times. None of their mobos fried either - but we did lose three outlets, one lightswitch, and two of our modems fried. I think your PS probably went bad and I certainly would check ionto replacing that first - potentially saving you a couple of hundred bucks. You ARE using a surge protector, right?
Hey Intel, AMD rulez!
