I have a MSI K7T266 Pro2 MB. Everything works fine with it, except if you click restart from windows, or save in bios, it hangs on restart. It just stops, power on, no video, exactly at the point when it should start restarting. You can shut it down and restart it w/o problem, or hit the front reset button and it starts right up. I haven't upgraded to the latest BIOS yet, but it has the 2nd most current. Any thoughts?

Does everything show up okay in Device Manager - no exclamation points?

Shutdown or Restart issues are usually caused by you not having the proper main chipset drivers loaded. It almost always has nothing to do with your bios version - DO NOT flash your bios unless you find specific info in release notes that say it will cure a problem you are having.
Go to http://www.viaarena.com - Drivers - Chipset or Platform Drivers - download the drivers and double click on the download to install them.

don't want to bomb this conversation but I have the same problem also. I can't restart or shutdown actually.

My computer goes through the full shutdown but once the screen goes black the computer stays on, same for restarting. Weird, never figured it out.

My system specs are in sig.

I'll go grab the latest chipset drivers now.

Device Managers all ok.

"Shutdown or Restart issues are usually caused by you not having the proper main chipset drivers loaded."

At first I installed the recommended 4in1 drivers for older MB's, then I found the driver disc that came with the board and installed those. Neither one worked.

I've seen this one before.

if your Pc had windows on it before and worked fine - then its probably a virus.

if this happens when windows is not running eg in the bios then it sounds like - memory , heat or Power.

I noticed novak has a lot of Juicy power consuming devices. Novak you have 2 G-cards in SLI right ... not nearly enough power from a 500W power supply for all that kit ... try running one G-card and disconnecting one HDD if it works then you know its power.

As you think, so shall you become - Bruce Lee

" At first I installed the recommended 4in1 drivers for older MB's, then I found the driver disc that came with the board and installed those."

The newest drivers on the Via web site are probably a lot newer that the ones that came with the mboard, and you shouldn't need to load older drivers on the Via web site unless you are using Win ME or earlier.

I took a look at the release notes for the bios updates on the MSI web sites - there is no mention of your problem, so flashing the bios is extremely unlikely to cure your problem.
You could try looking in the MSI Forum, searching using: K7T266 (you will get a lot more "hits" if you leave out Pro2), but I don't hold out much hope for that - it seems most problem posts have no one answering.

There's a small chance there is something minor wrong with your power supply that is causing this problem, or the PS may not have enough +5VSB current available (the more the better - the minumum required may be stated in your mboard manual). If you can try another PS, do that - the wiring of the main connector is likely standard, but in any case the wiring of any PS you try must have the same wire colors in the same position, except it doesn't matter whether or not there is a white wire at position 18. The MSI web site test results indicate any good quality PS 250 watts and up is fine for your mboard.
