I'm putting togather a computer and I just cant seem to get the computer to post. I hooked up everything correctly and start, everything spins, hard drives, cdroms then that's it.. monitor remains in standby.

This is the 2nd motherboard I've got.. It's an Asus P5VDC-X motherboard. I bought a 3.0 mhz P4 cpu. Today I got the replacement P5VDC-X motherboard and I hooked it up and still get no post nothing.

I then put the motherboard on cardboad and hooked up only the video card and still I get nothing. It's a socket 775 cpu so I let it run for 20 mins then pop the heatsink and the CPU was still cold, not even warm. At this point I'm not even sure what the problem is... I will check to see if someone has a socket 775 motherboard to test the cpu in to see if it's good.. The motherboard, I'm not sure if it's good. The PSU I think it's good.. man, I don't know what the problem could be.. anyone?

I guess it's either the motherboard or CPU.. power supply is a long shot though but any reason why the CPU would still be cold after 20 mins of runnign the computer?

To get a successful benchtest of the board you need to have Powersupply, motherboard, CPU with HSF, 1 stick of RAM, graphics, and keyboard.

Nothing else. You should have done this benchtest before putting the motherboard into the case, or connecting anything else. Since you have tried two motherboards the odds of having two failures are slim so I would lean towards the CPU being DOA. Unless you have missed out on properly connecting the additional 4 pin 12V power connector.

You haven't mentioned what spec/model powersupply you are using.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

You could be frying the motherboards. If you install motherboard standoffs where there isn't a hole in the motherboard, that can short out and damage the motherboard.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
