Computer mostly shuts down randomly?

Specs: windows 7
I built a desktop computer about a week ago and I just finally got it running on friday. While playing a couple games it sometimes will randomly mostly shut down. When I say mostly I mean the actual computer stays on (internal lights, fans) but I loose everything else coming out of the motherboard (mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers). After this happens the graphics card is usually pretty hot but not that bad and the cpu is cool.

Could this be a motherboard problem or is it a heating issue?

AMD Phenom 2 x4 840 processor
asus motherboard not sure on the exact one
Geforce gtx550ti 1Gb
600w power supply
4Gb DDR3 ram

I term this as "lock up". It could be a driver issue or a hardware issue (heating?).
Some Nvidia (Geforce) hardware has a tendency to run hot. The size of the heatsink and fan is a 'feature' to watch for.

How many case fans and sizes? Blowing in or out or combination? What case make / model? Is it in a desk cabinet or shelf? What make / model power supply?
