monitor made loud snap/pop sound and now does not work at all. any suggestions as to what went wrong with the monitor. Also, do you think it would be cheaper to repair the monitor or to purchase a new monitor. The monitor that died is 3 years old.

why it died it old and three years old and full of dust inside shorting some circuts out probley, buy a new one get a 17 incher flat screen on sale at bestbuy or office max home depot.

Is it 3yrs old or just under 3yrs? Some monitors have a 3 yr warranty. I have a KDS that just went bad and it had a 3yr warranty. The warranty would be up at the end of this month. Just made the dead line. They replaced mine with no questions asked.

to shbull darn that shipping cost had to be high.. i would like a flat screen ctr my self not the old bubble type the flats only cost about a $100.00 at bestbuy.

here is what you need to do if your monitor is out of warranty!!... I work at staples and I have gotten the newspaper add that will come out on thanksgiving we will be selling a 17 inch CTR (regular) monitor for 59.99 after mail-in rebate. This will go on sale the day after thanksgiving between the hours of 7am-11am only...
Good Luck...

It was KDS 17 Flat CRT. 22 DOT pitch, that I payed $300 for 3yrs ago. I haven't shipped it back yet. I just received the new one yesterday. But it will probably be around $25-$30. NewEgg charges about that much if you order one from them.

Disconnect your old monitor from the mains and open it up.
Be very careful that it is disconnected as inside there are voltages that can * KILL *, may even be some residing on capacitors etc. so do not dig around too much.
Blow out the muck and check if the internal fuse is ok. If not replace and see if monitor works.
If this fails, you have to decide whether it is worth spending on a device now 3 years old that perhaps is out of guarantee and inexpensive to replace with new.
Good luck - keep us posted.

Remember though that if you decide to open up your monitor casing, you are more than likely voiding any warranty that may still be on it. Make sure that the warranty is expired before you decide to poke and prod inside of it. And please be careful, shocks hurt.
