Hey guys-
I am concerned about why my pc keeps freezing randomly. I am sure you might have came across this issue before but I dont know why this keeps happening. This happens randomly and my mouse arrow would freeze and ctrl+alt+del doesnt work either so the only option is to restart my computer. This is frustrating coz it happens 4 or 5 times a day. I also checked the CPU temperature in my BIOS settings and it doesnt look like its overheating the CPU. I then added a small house fan next to my pc just in case some other hardware is overheating but still hasnt worked. Also, I have upgraded my pc to XP but this problem happened before the upgrade so I dont think its anything to do with OS. Recently, I have also protected my pc from virus and spywares by downloading adware and sophos antivirus so I know its not caused by trojans or viruses. I also have 256 MB RAM and Duron 800 MHz CPU so i am not sure if it has anything to do with slow memory or CPU. However, I have noticed that everytime I scan for virus using Sophos Anti-virus program the pc freezes often in the middle of the scan. I dont think its problem with the Sophos but it might be something to do with the memory. I am just guessing here though.
Any one have suggestions? I have also analyzed my system using SiSoftware Sandra Utility. If you would like to know more about my pc then I will send the report from Sandra. I would really appreciate any feedback.
Thanks
Neo

First I would remove the anti-virus Sophos you installed. Maybe you can try AVG Free Edition by downloading from www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php - it is a reliable virus protection.
If your PC continues to halt, chances are it is either the CPU or MB itself that is gone. You could try to borrow a CPU to test it (easier to remove the CPU than the all board). If problem persists, them the MB might be damaged.

Hi,
I had the same problem in winXp pro my system kept freezing up in the middle of doing an email or writing a letter.Took it to my local computer shop and they told me that the DDR RAM was dying so they replaced it and since then the problem has stopped.
