computer just shuts off after running for awh

Specs: Windows XP Pro
This computer has starting shutting itself off after it has been running awhile. It takes awhile before can get it to turn back on, then it runs for an hour or two and then cuts off again. Haven't got any error messages about operating system. I have taken the cover off and blown out dust and debris. I think it is the processor cooling fan. How do I know if the cooling fan on the processor or the computer system cooling fan, or both are bad?

Could it be something else even?

...several reasons:

1. Bad fan ( overheating )
2. Bad RAM
3. Bad PSU

If the fan is pushing air and not making any strange noise, it's fine. Download SpeedFan to monitor your system temperatures as the PC runs.

However I doubt that heat is your problem, since the computer needs time to recover before it can be powered on again. Last time a computer did this, I had to replace a bad voltage regulator on the motherboard. But before your blame your motherboard, test the power supply. If you don't have a spare power supply with the same (or greater) wattage on hand, find a local computer repair shop; they usually keep plenty of spare components. The nicer shops will let you use spares free of charge.

Now fully Se7ened.
