Computer Froze, Won't Turn On

September 27, 2010 at 13:04:59
Specs: Windows Vista
The computer screen went black & "recovered" with a error message about a display failure & recovery from NIVIDIA. However, the computer screen was frozen (aside from the mouse) & I shut down the computer by pressing as well as holding the button for 15 seconds. Now, the computer won't turn on! When I press the power button I get one of two responses: 1) no response or 2) the lights & fans come on but do not run properly (flicker or run slowly)... Oh, there is also a loud screeching noise...

The computer has had a number of problems including random crashes (with a blue screen commenting on "compiling memory for physical dump) & not "waking" from sleeping as well as messages about the fan not being fast enough to boot the computer...

What could be wrong, any suggestions?

"What could be wrong"

The comment about the fan is probably the key. Is this a desktop system or a laptop? When's the last time you blew the dust out of it? If the fans and/or heatsinks are dust clogged, they can't cool properly. That causes the system to overheat & shutdown.

A desktop & a year ago would be the last time I blew the dust out of it.

Although, I thought that might be the problem so I just finished doing that...

I also bought a new PS so, *fingers crosses!*

It didn't work. I blew the dust out of it & replaced the PS. Nothing. The lights no longer flicker & the fans work properly but the screeching sound is still there & it still won't turn on. What next?
