My computer freezes every single time I boot. It goes into high fan and freezes, then I hold down the power button for 5 seconds, it turns off, it automatically turns itself back on, freezes on high fan again, I hold down the power button for 5 seconds, it turns off, it automatically turns itself back on, it goes to high fan, then low fan, and boots.
That happens EVERY SINGLE TIME I boot. Also, it often freezes when restoring from hibernation, and/or when trying to go to standby, and/or randomly. The mouse doesn't move, no response from anything, it just sits there. I've tried everything, I don't know what to do! Can anyone help?

Here are some things you can try.
1. Load default settings in your BIOS
2. Run memtest86 to see if it's your RAM
3. Remove all hardware except for your motherboard and hard drive, see if it boots
4. Try a Linux Live CD and see if it works okay

Not that I'm trying to flame you but a bland statement "I've tried everything" doesn't help and it can hardly be true or you would have found the answer. Please explain what you have tried. ie: Have you opened the case to check/re-seat all cables & cards? ( With power disconnected of course). Have you checked BIOS settings to see if thermal cutout is set too low? Could the Heatsink fan be clogged up or be faulty? Could there be a fault/weakness in the powersupply? ( eMachines are notorious for weak PSUs)

It's best not to use standby or hibernate on a desktop machine...those features were designed for laptops.
Check for overheating, failing PSU (common with eMachines), or bad RAM.

I've tried to reply for a while, but my computer keeps freezing... Argh... I will do this in pieces to try and ensure it doesn't happen, as this will be a long post.
To Richard59: I've been building computers since 1985. If I didn't mean what I said, I wouldn't post it. Here's what I have done:
#1: Taken everything out of the case (except the motherboard), including the PSU, CPU, RAM, drives, & video card. I then cleaned everything with canned air as much as I could.
#2: Reloaded the Restore DVD. Twice.
#3: Ensured Avast! was the first thing I loaded on restore.

#4: Used Ultimate Boot Disk to run memtest86, Stress Test, etc for a couple days. No errors.
(Incidentally, since it won't even boot to BIOS until the third boot, I don't see how it could be an OS problem)
Any more ideas? I really don't want to start buying random components.
Also, I really need to use the automatic standby/hibernation features, as Kaua'i has $0.45/kWh electricity, and my kids are horrible about turning off the computer when I'm at work.

Has there been ANY power surges there or lightning strikes close by ? try another power supply, You might have a bad / or going bad Motherboard..

No, we almost never get lightning strikes, but Kaua'i power is notorious for being noisy. It sounds like it might be my power supply, so I'm going to try and find one on ebay that will ship to Hawai'i.

Yea, eMachines are made by Gateway and they use cheap/weak power supplys and front power switches.. I found this about your emachine;
http://parts.emachines.com/moreinfo...

Thanks for the link. I went looking for that, but only found a "chat" link on the emachines web site. I can tell you that my AC voltage has been approximately 122V the last few days, which should be sufficient, but cheap digital multimeters can't measure noise.
I'm looking at ebay models instead of paying that much for something that already failed.

I found out my other computer, which works perfectly, has a nearly identical ATX power supply, but it seems to be much nicer, as it has an on/off hard switch on the back, and it has four pass-through plugs as well. I swapped PSU's, and it's somewhat better, but not quite perfect. It doesn't freeze as much, but it still does the weird startup routine sometimes. Plus, it still does something I forgot to mention at the beginning. It will randomly turn itself on, without any interaction from me.
Could it be the power switch itself? That seems a bit simple to be causing all these problems, and I don't know how I could test that particular component.
