Hi
Just wondering if anyone has seen this before.

Hard drive makes a clicking sound and approx 5-10 secs later the computer freezes. Seems to happen a lot more when the computer is cold (once every 5 mins) but still happens once every 30 mins when warmed up.

Changed the hard drive and the problem's still there. Also tried booting up with the CD-ROMs disconnected but no change.

Any ideas on what it is or how to troubleshoot this? No new hardware has been added recently.

Cheers

Usually, clicking from a HDD indicates it's ready to "give up the ghost". I suggest you backup any important data before it's lost for good, then go to the HDD manufacturer's website & download the diagnostic software.

Yeah, I thought it would be a hard drive problem too, so I installed a new hard drive and reloaded the OS (Win98SE) but the problem is still there.

Cheers

That's why there's diagnostics programs - to test the integrity of the drive. It would have saved you from needlessly replacing it.

It is not the hard drive. It is the controller. Change channel or the controller. You may get this problem when you are on a PCI controller card.
Try to get the lastest driver for the controller and chipset.

Dont allow the hd go to sleep mode may help m\but not the best solution.
