I'm trying to fix an old computer I have, so that I can use it for word prossessing for school. I re-formatted the drive, (there are two, but the slave drive is empty, and I'm going to take it out soon anyhow)and installed windows, but when I tryed to install Word, it began freezing. I thought it was a problem with windows, or something, and a friend of mine told me to re-format. I did that, but then it froze in the dos program that I used to reformat it. I managed to instal the cd drivers once more, but it froze on the Windows installation again. I took the thing apart, and blew some dust out of it, and made sure that all the conections were secure, as that's all I know to do with hardware. I think that it is a hardware problem, but I dont' know how to fix it. I really need it working, and soon. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Windows locking up can sometimes be a RAM problem. There are memory testing software that you can download and run from a floppy and test your memory. This will eliminate bad memory as a possible problems.

When was the last time this comp ran ok?
Was it running ok before you decided to install Word?
Which version of Word are you trying to install?

I agree it may be a RAM problem. But it could be overheating.
Clear all the dust from the CPU fan.

You could try taking the RAM out and reseating it.

Fdisk, repartition and format in DOS, then reload windows.

Report back
